Kauai Day 4 – Scuba

The morning of the 4th day started with a visit to Glass beach. According to Wikipedia, Glass Beach is a beach in Eleele, an industrial area in Kauai, Hawaii, that is made of sea glass. It is in Hanapepe Bay, near Port Allen Harbor. The beach’s regular rock is basalt, but the sea glass formed after years of discarded glass. After Glass Beach we headed to The Kauai Coffee Estate, the largest coffee farm in the U.S.

Scuba – After checking in at the dive shop and completing all the liability paperwork we headed to Koloa Landing for our shore dive. Since Kevin has never been diving he was doing a “try scuba” introduction and needed to have an orientation course. After the quick course we suited up and headed out into the water. In order for Kevin to dive he need to complete a few skills just under the water. Unfortunately, just going under the water made Kevin too nervous and after three attempts Kevin decided to head back to shore… perhaps he will try again some day in a more controlled environment.

Jenney decided to let the girls head down on their own and joined Kevin for a more leisurely snorkel along the rocky shore. They saw lots of fish and even had an opportunity to observe a green sea turtle up close.

Meanwhile Teryn and Logan had a great dive with the instructor Shaun. They also saw many fish, eels and a large sea turtle.

After snacks and a short break Teryn and Logan headed out for a second dive and Jenney joined them and Shaun took a wonderful picture to the trio underwater.

Here we had to make the decision to either go back for a leisurely evening, everyone was tired, or to see the sunset and to watch for turtles beaching. Even though watching the sunset probably means a slower start in the morning, the team opted for more adventure. The sunset was beautiful and we got to see lots of turtles in the surf, but excited tourist turned the turtles away for from the beach as they approached. These close encounters with people who can’t give wildlife distance are always frustrating, especially to Teryn. We decided not to contribute, and headed home. Turtles next time. At 9pm the ride home always feels longer and dinner felt especially late (sautéd kale and onion topped Beyond Burgers), but overall it was a successful day.
